BREAKTHROUGH!!!

I admit that I was afraid of how I was going to unwrap my model, mainly due to the fact that there would be so many little places that I would have to organize but thanks to the "stitch option" (which I found to be a god send) made things so much easier, and now my surface is unwrapped in a much more organized way.

I will now be able to take it into Adobe Photoshop and make my map.

Themed Scifi Crate

The task has been given to make our crates out to be as if they were apart of a chosen video game. (Really good idea, it gives us direction and inspiration)

I went on the internet and found a few environmental examples.

I also found an image that gives a fantastic example of a metal surface texture overlay as well as some insignias from the game that would perfectly.

If one hasn't guessed yet then the game I chose was Mass Effect. The current result of my compilation is as follows.

Everything has blended together pretty well and it is still a work in progress. One major thing I will add is that anyone who knows the game or at least saw the images above Mass Effect has a lot of shooting so I'm going to make it look as if this crate was caught in the crossfire with some scorch marks and blast holes, which should be fun...

The UVs

There were a few places that worked best for the UV unwrap which fit in pretty easily.
It's not just a simple four sided box, if it were then unwrapping it would be easy. I found it more easy to work with if I just worked with a few sides at a time instead of all at once like doing the top then the left and right sides. Once properly placed I could collapse my model stack in the modify panel of the 3D Max editor to move on to the next side and make it easier to work with.

SciFi crate entry 2

This is my beginning geometry and it took me between 15 to 20 minutes to model out for each. The production of the textures took a little longer, about 45 minutes.

Finished Product for the chosen space crate
All together with the model touch ups and texture production and placement it took around two hours with the total number of polygons at 232.

SciFi crate

Official project number 1 - Scifi crate.

Commencement on the project began January 31st 2014. We were all given this image as a concept for the crate that we are supposed to make, given the choice of either in the image to construct.
I chose the crate on the left to full model out and texture map but I modeled the one on the right out as well.
Both models were simple were simple and took no more than between 15 to 20 minutes to model. The texture maps however were the ones that took the longest which were about an hour to make in photoshop.

As of today 02/07/2014 both are fully modeled and are about to be textured.
